Monthly Mathematical Colloquium (MMC) 2/2024

On March 22, 2024, PSM UMPSA achieved yet another successful milestone by organizing the second Monthly Mathematical Colloquium (MMC) of the year. This gathering served as a platform for intellectual exchange and featured a knowledge-sharing session by three PhD students.
 
In the first session, Fatin Hanani binti Hasan, a Ph.D. student supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Sham Mohamad, shared her research entitled "Automorphisms and Compatible Actions for Finite Cyclic Groups of Order". This study aimed to find generators, determine the number of automorphisms, and establish compatibility conditions for finite cyclic groups of p-power order, where p is an odd prime.

Kho Yap Bing, a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Rahimah Jusoh@Awang presented his research entitled "Magnetohydrodynamic Unsteady Hybrid Nanofluid Flow and Heat Transfer". His study aimed to construct mathematical models for the unsteady stagnation flow of Cu-SiO2 hybrid nanofluid and investigate the effects of magnetic fields, thermal radiation, suction, and unsteadiness on heat transfer over a stretching/shrinking sheet.

Lastly, Syahrizal Salleh presented his research titled "Hybrid Box-Jenkins Model and Artificial Neural Network for Forecasting Electricity Demand from Battery Electric Vehicles" under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Roslinazairimah Zakaria. His study aimed to transform start and stop charging data from My Electric Avenue into a daily count of simultaneous peak electricity demand occurrences from charging BEVs, facilitating time series analysis. Subsequently, a hybrid BJ-Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model will be developed to enhance forecasting accuracy, with a comparative analysis between raw transformed data and power demand derived from individual BEV chargers. Additionally, the study will assess potential improvements by decomposing the transformed data using Seasonal-Trend decomposition using LOESS (STL) and further decomposing residuals using Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD).

An interactive Question and Answer (Q&A) session followed the presentations, during which the audience actively engaged with the speakers, offering constructive suggestions and comments. These inputs are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the speakers' preparations for their upcoming pre-viva examinations, and significant milestones in their academic journeys.
