Monthly Mathematical Colloquium (MMC) 8, 2021

Another month, another colloquium. On the 3rd September 2021, The Applied & Industrial Mathematics and Statistics (AIMS) research cluster, Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) has organized the 8th colloquium for this year.

The 8th series was our first colloquium which we open to public. We have received numerous requests from participants outside our centre to join the talk. The colloquium has risen its popularity due to our renowned invited speaker, Prof Dr Nor Haniza binti Sarmin.

Prof Dr Nor Haniza talks about “A Smooth Sailing in a Postgraduate Journey: Tips for Students and Supervisors”. In her sharing, she often emphasizes on the importance of the communication in between the supervisor and the student. Poor communication can cause conflict and prolonged conflict can incurs stress to both parties. That is why having a two-ways communication is crucial. The students must always discuss and be transparent to their supervisors whenever they have problems. While the supervisors must have empathy and understanding to their student’s situation. Both parties must play their vital role to achieve the one goal, finish the study and graduated.

Prof Dr Nor Haniza shared few tips on the topic including time management, publication, thesis writing, thesis submission, viva, thesis correction, networking with other researchers, harmony situations between supervisor and students, mentor mentee and others.

We hope that the participants have gained invaluable knowledge through the sharing and can apply the knowledge to their supervision/study journey.

See you in our next colloquium!
