Profesor Turun Padang: UMPSA Launches Initiative to Train School Students for Mathematical Olympiads 2023

As an effort to cultivate a culture of mathematical excellence and nurture young talent, the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (PSM) at the Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), has initiated a comprehensive training program to prepare school students for Mathematical Olympiads competition. This program has been named as ‘Profesor Turun Padang: Workshop on Techniques for Answering Mathematical Olympiad Questions’ on December 8, 2023.

PSM is highly synonymous with a deep emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, especially in mathematics. PSM has collaborated with one of the boarding schools at Kuantan which is Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Kuantan (INTeK), to provide specialized training sessions and aimed to improve students' problem-solving skills and mathematical abilities. This program is conducted by nine mathematics lecturers from PSM, covering various topics aligned with the requirements of mathematical Olympiad competitions.

A total of 59 students have participated in this program, covering from Form 1 to Form 4. Students have been exposed to various challenging mathematical problems and POLYA'S problem-solving techniques. In addition, the program is also to introduce the format of mathematical Olympiad question papers. PSM has provided and shared specific materials with schools, including problem sets and reference books, to enhance students' learning and preparation for participation in Mathematical Olympiads.

The goal of this program is to inspire students' interest in mathematics and higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). By providing structured exercises and resources, it is hoped to empower students to excel in participating in Mathematical Olympiads and to higher levels.

Students who participating in this program have express their gratitude to UMPSA's commitment for nurturing mathematical talent. This initiative has received positive attention from the teachers as it reflects a collaborative effort to enhance the standard of mathematical education in Malaysia and bring honour to the school if they win the Mathematical Olympiad competition next year. Plans for similar program in the coming year have also been discussed as a continuous effort toward preparing the students for the National Mathematical Olympiad competition in 2024.
